Balanced Attack Leads Lewis Women's Basketball Over Bellarmine 88-84

Sam Rinehart leads Lewis with 16 points

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – A season-high six Flyers finished in double-digits in Lewis women's basketball's 88-84 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Bellarmine on Saturday (Feb. 4) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers were led by junior Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion)'s (Marion, Iowa/Marion) 16 points. She finished 7-of-9 from the free throw line. For the game, Lewis made 22-of-26 free throws.
 
“The last couple weeks especially, we've done a better job of sharing the basketball and having a good offensive flow,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “That was the epitome of what happened tonight.”
 
Lewis took a lead as large as 15 in the first half thanks to a 21-8 push midway through the frame. Rinehart led Lewis with nine points in the first half.
 
The Flyers built their lead to as many as 20 points in the second but Bellarmine chipped at the lead thanks to five second half 3-pointers.
 
The Knights were within six points at 78-72 with 4:04 left when freshman Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) connected on a 3-pointer to push Lewis' advantage back to nine. Rinehart assisted on the basket.
 
“If you notice on that possession the ball went inside first and that has to happen for us,” Carlsen said.
 
The game was clinched when freshman Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) drove to the basket and scored with 16 seconds remaining. The layup pushed Lewis' lead back to five points and gave the Flyers the breathing room they needed.
 
Bellarmine's leading scorer, Kylie Brady, entered Saturday's contest averaging 14.5 points per game. The Flyers held her to 0-of-7 shooting and zero points.  
 
Nellen finished with 15 points and five assists. She made 3-of-4 3-point attempts. Freshman Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) added 11 points thanks in part to making all five of her free throws. Senior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) (Sterling, Ill./Sterling), senior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg) (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg/Eastern Illinois) and sophomore Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) (Washington, Ill./Washington) each added 10 points.
 
Bellarmine falls to 10-11 (4-9 GLVC). Lewis improves to 5-16 (3-10 GLVC). The Flyers are at Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday for a 5:45 p.m. start.
