Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University freshman forward Jessica Saffell scored her first collegiate goal at the most opportune time, as she took all of 65 seconds to end overtime and give the Flyers the 2-1 extra-session win over Saginaw Valley State in the season opener at the Lewis Stadium on Thursday (August 30) night.

Assisting on the play was fellow freshman Lauren Bowles (Libertyville, Ill./Carmel Catholic) (Libertyville, Ill./Carmel Catholic), who also scored her first career goal in the 33rd minute. Flyer senior Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) notched the assist on Bowlees' tally.

"It's great to start the season with a win," Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. "From top to bottom, I thought we really gutted it out and tonight was definitely a team victory."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 1-0, while the visiting Cardinals are now 0-1.

Lewis junior goalkeeper Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made six stops to earn the win for the Flyers. Her counterpart, Laura Ivezaj recorded four saves on the evening.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 2), as they welcome Tiffin to Romeoville for a 12 PM first kick.
