Liberty, Mo. – The Lewis University women's soccer team defeated William Jewell 3-2, on Friday (Sept. 14) in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Greene Stadium. Freshman Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) put in the game-winner with less than 20 seconds left in the game to get the Flyers fourth win of the season and second in conference play.
“William Jewel is a nice team and tonight was the better team,” Lewis head women's soccer coach
Chris Koenig said. “We were fortunate to get a couple of late goals and create off of some set pieces.”
Lewis got on the board first in the 21
st minute when
Sarah Pawelko (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) sent a pass up to
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) inside the box for the goal.
William Jewell put the equalizer past Lewis goalkeeper
Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), when Ashley Licata passed ahead to Jade Gifford for a shot at the top of the box in the 55
th minute. The Cardinals went ahead when Sarah Franklin found Licata to put the ball past Nie in the 67
th minute of the game.
Lewis' Pawelko tied the game for a second time with her unassisted shot from the far left wing that got past Sontag in the 87
th minute. Saffell added her third game-winning goal of the year in the 90
th minute.
“We need to make sure we reset and focus on Rockhurst on Sunday,” said Koenig. “We had too many turnovers, too many giveaways tonight.”
The Flyers continue on the road in GLVC action when they take on Rockhurst on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 12 PM in Kansas City, Mo.
