Kansas City, Mo. – The Lewis University women's soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal disadvantage in the first half against Rockhurst on Sunday (Sept. 16) at Bourke Field. The Flyers fell to the Hawks, 3-1, to fall to 4-2 on the season, 2-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Rockhurst (5-0, 4-0 GLVC) quickly went up 2-0 in the first ten minutes of the first half. The Hawks first goal was scored by Taylor Skala on an 8-yard shot, assisted Ally Rodriguez and Julia Bartolacci in the 7
th minute. Rockhurst added their second goal in the 9
th minute on a Rodriguez header in front of the goal with a pass in from the corner by Nicky Alfonsin.
“I think Rockhurst was a difficult team to play at home,” Lewis' women's soccer head coach
Chris Koenig said. “I have to give them some credit, they are off to a great start.”
The Flyers got on the board in the 29
th minute, when
Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) (Algonquin, Ill./ Marian Central Catholic) shot a ball into the back of the net from the 12-yard line. Flyers'
Danielle Warner (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) fed Thomas the ball.
“We got our goal to make it 2-1 and I thought at point we could get back in it,” Koenig said. “Then (Rockhurst) got the penalty kick to go up 3-1 and it is tough to chase in this league.”
The Hawks added a third goal in the 31
st minute off a Kasey Lierz penalty kick. Rockhurst out shot Lewis 23-5, with 11-4 shots on goal. The Hawks also earned more corners, 8-6, than the Flyers.
“I think the girls will bounce back from this,” Koenig said. “We will focus on Kentucky Wesleyan next and hopefully we will go 2-0 next weekend.”
Lewis stays on the road next weekend in GLVC action, heading to Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday (Sept. 21) with a 2:30 PM kickoff. On Sunday (Sept. 23), the Flyers will take on Southern Indiana at 2:30 PM.
