Romeoville, Ill. - Freshman Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) scored in overtime to help the Lewis Unviersity women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over McKendree at Lewis Stadium Friday (Sept. 28).
The Flyers improve to 7-2 on the season and 5-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, while the Bearcats fall to 5-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the GLVC.
The Bearcats got on the board first with an unassisted goal by Alyssa Patterson in the 11th minute.
"McKendree came out in the first half, set the tone and we struggled with that," Lewis head women's soccer head coach
Chris Koenig said. "I am proud of the team for the way they bounced back in the second half."
The Flyers evened the score up at one, late in the second half when freshman
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) found the back of the net, after receiving a pass from
Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) in the 75th minute.
In the overtime period, Lewis was able to create a scoring opportunity off a McKendree turnover. Moran sent a ball up to Saffell, who got past a defender and the goalkeeper for the game-winning goal in the 98th minute.
"(Saffell) has a knack for finding the back of the net," Koenig said. "She finds herself in the right place, right time and she knows what to do when she's there."
The Flyers are back in action at Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 30) when they take on Bellarmine at 2:30 PM.
