Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis Women's Soccer team stays undefeated in 2012 with the 3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference match victory over Drury on Friday (Sept. 7) at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers are off to their best start at 3-0 since the 1997 season when that squad won seven games to start the year. Drury falls to 2-1 on the season, 0-1 in GLVC action.
The Flyers played a tough first half against the Panthers, but were able to score first off a set piece from sophomore
Sarah Pawelko (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) (Lemont, Ill./Lemont High/Ball State), receiving a touch pass from
Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) about 25 yards out from the goal.
Lewis added a second goal in the 43rd minute of the first half when
Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) received a pass from Pawelko right in front of the goal and pushed the ball past Drury's goalkeeper Kelsey Vaught.
In the second half, Drury's forwards came out pushing the ball hard on Lewis' defense. Panther forward Shelby Hatz put Drury on the board in the 57th minute when she dribbled past two Lewis defenders.
Freshman forward Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./ West Aurora) scored the game winner in the 63rd minute off a pass from senior midfielder
Aly Lansky (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East).
Keeping the pressure on Lewis' defenders, Drury's Emily Cline played give-and-go with Lindsay Sprouse, getting the ball past the Flyers' goalkeeper
Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) to push the score to 3-2 in the 77th minute.
The Flyers welcome Missouri S&T to Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 9). The match is set to kick off at 2:30 PM.
