Lewis Women's Basketball Hosts William Jewell in GLVC Home Opener

Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team (8-2, 1-1 GLVC) will host William Jewell (7-3, 1-1 GLVC) in the Flyers' Great Lakes Valley Conference home opener on Thursday, (Jan. 10) at Neil Carey Arena with a 5:30 PM tip-off. 

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS - Coach Jill Cress has been at the helm of the William Jewell program for 17th seasons. The Cardinals are second in the GLVC with a defense that holds teams to 55.1 points per game. Katlyn Wood leads the conference with 18 blocked shots, averaging 1.8 blocks per game.

ALL TIME SERIES - This is the first time the squads have faced off all time. 

HOME GLVC OPENERS IN CARLSEN ERA - The Flyers are 4-1 in their GLVC home openers in Head Coach Lisa Carlsen's tenure. Lewis fell to Bellarmine 82-65 in the 2010-11 season. 

HOME ON THE ROAD - The Flyers hold a 5-1 record in games on the road after opening their GLVC schedule on the road last weekend. 

LEADING AT HALF - Lewis has led going into the locker room in all but two games this season. They are 1-1 when heading into the half down by a score of 30-27. Lewis defeated Saginaw Valley State (Nov. 10) but fell to Missouri S&T (Jan. 5).

HEAD START - The Flyers have jumped out their best start since the 1997-98 squad went 13-1 before getting handed their second loss of the season to Southern Indiana (Jan. 15) 81-66. That team finished 23-5 overall, 15-3 in the GLVC and made an NCAA Regional Tournament appearance.

NATIONAL RANKINGS - Lewis is No. 13 in the country with a scoring average of 77.1 points per game. The squad is also No. 13 in three-point field goal percentage (38.5). 

NELLEN NATIONALLY RANKED - Sophomore Nikki Nellen is 17th nationally, averaging 5.4 assists per game. 

ALL-TIMER - Senior Labrenthia Murdock has moved up to No. 8 in school history with 74 blocks. Audra Ross (1991-94) is sitting at No. 7 with 80 career blocks. 

MOUSE IN THE HOUSE - Guard Alyssa Dengler posted a career-high 8 points against Drury, to push her scoring average to 2.3 points in 12.2 minutes a game. She has only committed two turnovers with 11 assists and been whistled for only three fouls this season. 

NUMBERS VS THE GLVC - The Flyers are second and third in five different categories overall in the GLVC. 
- second in points (77.1); and 3-point field goal percentage (62-161, .385). 
- third in field goal percentage (272-610, .446); assists (169, 16.9 per game); and defensive rebounds (304, 30.4 per game).

INDIVIDUAL FLYERS STACKING UP IN THE GLVC - Nellen's 5.4 assists-per-game average tops the GLVC. Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) and Murdock are three-four in three-point field goal percentage at 46.3 % (19-for-41) and 45.9% (17-for-37), respectively.
