Romeoville, Ill. – In the eighth minute of overtime, Southern Indiana was able to find the back of the net to capture a tough 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Lewis University women's soccer team on Friday (Oct. 11) at Lewis Stadium.
USI's Natalie Geiger got a foot on a throw in by Julia Kohnen to change the path of the ball enough for it to trickle by Lewis goalkeeper
Mara Bennett (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) at the 97:50 mark.
The Flyers fall to 6-4-1 on the year and 4-4-1 in GLVC action while the Screaming Eagles improve to 7-3-1 for the campaign and 5-3-1 in league play.
"We defended well for a large portion of the game," Lewis head women's soccer coach
Chris Koenig said. "We did a lot of things well tonight, which is frustrating when we don't get the win."
"Tonight was a very good GLVC game," Koenig continued. "In this conference, it really does come down to one play."
Southern Indiana outshot the Flyers, 13-9, including an upper hand in shots on goal, 6-4.
The Flyers' Bennett corralled five saves while the Screaming Eagles' goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann picked up the clean sheet with four saves.
Lewis is back in action at Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 13), when they host Illinois Springfield at 12 PM.
