Lewis Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Bellarmine, 3-0

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) picked up 16 kills, three service aces and two block assists in the women's volleyball 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 26-24) sweep of Bellarmine at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Oct. 12).
 
The Flyers improve to 12-5 on the season and 8-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Knights fall to 8-7 on the year and 4-5 in league play.
 
Flyers outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) collected 13 kills, two block solos and one block assists in the contest. Junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had a floor-high 34 assists and seven digs while redshirt freshman libero Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) picked up 11 digs.
 
"Today was a big win," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "We cleaned up our communication and unforced errors."
 
"The team was focused," Smith continued. "Sometimes you lose a match and come back even better the next one, which is what the team did today."
 
In the first set, the Flyers used a five-point run to surge past the Knights, 22-14. Sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) collected two aces as Vertin picked up a kill and 1.5 blocks to give the Flyers the lead. Lewis was able to put out a mini-run by Bellarmine to take the set, 25-19.
 
Lewis controlled the second set from the start, collecting the first six points. Davito picked up six of the Flyers' 15 kills, spurring the squad to a 25-17 set victory.
 
The Knights didn't back down in the third set as the squads exchanged nine ties. After Bellarmine tied the set at 24-all, Lewis captured the set and match with back-to-back kills from Vertin.  
 
Bellarmine's offense was led by Emily McDaniel's 11 kills. Setter Bailey BredenbeckCorp collected 34 assists, seven digs and three kills while libero Jaclyn Ohlmann had 10 digs and two service aces.
 
Lewis heads on the road to Indiana take on No. 25 University of Indianapolis on Friday (Oct 18) with first serve at 7 PM ET.
