The 12-match unbeaten streak by the No. 5 Lewis University men's soccer team came to an end, as Rockhurst claimed the 2-0 win over the host Flyers to claim sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at Lewis Stadium on Friday (Oct. 18) night.

With the win, Rockhurst improves to 10-2-1 on the campaign and 9-1-1 in GLVC action, while the host Flyers drop to 8-1-4 on the season and 7-1-3 in conference play.

Rockhurst made the most of their restarts on Friday, as they had one score off of a throw-in and another off of a free kick.

The Hawks struck in the 11th minute, as defender Jon Schreiber beat Lewis goalkeeper Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) following a George Skevington throw-in to put Rockhurst ahead, 1-0. Paul Dean also assisted on the play.

The score would remain that way until the 78:27 mark, as Rockhurst sophomore defender Nick Caruso headed in a Paolo Scoppola corner kick to provide some insurance for the Hawks at 2-0.

Pickett finished the game with one save, while his counterpart Ryan Bass made three stops in goal for the Hawks.

As a team, Rockhurst outshot the Flyers, 6-5, with both teams recording three shots on frame.

"We gave up six shots and gave up two goals on restarts," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "That's what the ballgame came down to - a corner and a throw.

"We did some good things out there tonight, we attacked and played well, but now it's time to get it together and prepare for William Jewell."

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 20), as the Flyers host William Jewell for a 2:30 PM first kick at Lewis Stadium.
