Rensselaer, Ind. -
The Lewis University men's soccer team is off to its best start since 2008, as freshman defender Ralf Zehnter (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) scored in the 88th minute to lift the visiting Flyers to the 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over Saint Joseph's at Joseph L. Minelli Memorial Field on Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon.

Zehnter's game-winner came in a flurry, as he gathered in a rebound shot by teammate John McLachlan (Berwyn, Ill./Nazareth Academy) and headed it over SJC goalkeeper Steve Quella at the 87:52 mark.

"I am happy for the players," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "They worked hard on the road - and they had to - because Saint Joseph's is a tough field to get a result on and to preserve our record."

With the win, Lewis moves to 2-0-2 on the campaign and 1-0-1 in GLVC action, while the host Pumas drop to 1-2-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play. This is the Flyers' best start since they opened the 2008 season with four-straight victories.

Lewis senior goalkeeper Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) made two saves for his second shutout of the season, while Quella made seven stops for the Pumas.

As a team, Lewis outshot Saint Joseph's, 22-4, and had nine shots on goal to the Pumas' two.

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Sept. 20), as they square off with Truman State for a 3:30 PM first kick in Kirksville, Mo.
