Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's soccer team stayed perfect at home with a 4-1 victory over Maryville on Friday (Sept. 27) at Lewis Stadium.
The Flyers improve to a 5-1-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play while Maryville falls to 0-6-1 on the year and 0-4-1 in league play.
"Tonight was one of those games where we showed what the team is made of," Lewis head women's soccer coach
Chris Koenig said. "We knew that Maryville is well organized and plays a more direct style than what we've faced recently."
Despite a goal by Maryville's Shannon Foley, fed by Amanda Wiechens, in the 5
th minute the Flyers were able to even the score in the 20
th minute.
Sophomore forward
Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) scored the equalizer on a pass from freshman
Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) from the 15-yard line.
Lewis sophomore midfielder
Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) scored the game-winner in the 74th minute on an assist from
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows), for her third goal this season.
In the 78
th minute, Chavez scored her second goal in the contest when she scored on a shot from the 25-yard line. Chavez leads the GLVC with seven goals on the season.
"We really didn't start with a lot of energy in the first half," Koenig said. "The team was able to regrouped and put Maryville on their heels"
Lewis added a fourth goal in the 85
th minute from Carmody to put the game out of reach. Freshman Carmody posted up her defender and connected on the turn around shot from the 10-yard line, for her second goal of the season.
Maryville goalkeeper Mandy Browning picked up eight saves, while Flyers' keeper freshman
Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) corralled three shots.
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 12 PM taking on the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Lewis Stadium.
