Lewis Women’s Soccer Opens Season With 1-0 Win Over Ferris State

Lewis’ Chavez scored in the 60th minute; Meyer and Nie combine for shutout in goal.

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University sophomore forward Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) scored the game-winning goal in 60th minute of the game to secure the 1-0 victory for the women's soccer team against Ferris State on Saturday (Sept. 7) at Lewis Stadium.
 
Sophomores Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) and Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) made quick passes up the field to get Chavez the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and put it in the back of the net.
 
The Flyers move to 1-0 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 0-2.
 
“We will take the win and run with it,” Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. “We aren't a full 90-minute team yet, but I was happy in the way we came out with energy in the second half.”
 
The Flyers outshot the Bulldogs 12-6, while Ferris State earned more corners, 4-2.
 
Lewis goalkeepers – freshman Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) and senior Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) (2 saves) - combined for the shutout in goal for the Flyers. Their counterparts – Savanna Wojtanowski and Rachel McCollum had six saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
 
The Flyers wrap up non-conference play against Northern Michigan on Monday (Sept. 9) at Lewis Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
