No. 25 Lewis Women's Basketball Takes On UW-Parkside On Monday

Romeoville, Ill. - The target is a bit bigger now as the No. 25 Lewis University women's basketball team (12-2, 6-0 GLVC) heads into their Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up against UW-Parkside (5-9, 1-5 GLVC) on Monday (Jan. 20) as the only unbeaten team in league play. Tipoff at DeSimone Gymnasium is set for 5:30 PM.

SERIES RECORD – Lewis holds a 37-22 series record over the Rangers.

LAST TIME WE FACED OFF - The Flyers and the Rangers met four times in 2012-13 season, the last in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional in Ashland, Ohio. Lewis had won the three previous meetings, but the Rangers edged the Flyers 59-49 in the last match-up on March 13, 2013. Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) posted a career-high 23 points as she made a career-high six three-pointers.

LAST TIME ON THE COURT – The Flyers defeated UIS 80-68 on Saturday (Jan. 18) at UIS' TRAC in Springfield, Ill. Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) paced the Flyers with 23 points and 14 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. 

STREAKIN' - With the Flyers win over UIS on Jan. 18th, the Flyers matched the 2006-07 season squad's streak of nine-straight victories from Feb. 10 to March 9, 2007. The Lewis program record of 13-straight victories also took place in the 2006-07 campaign from Dec. 9, 2006 to Feb. 3, 2007.

BACK IN THE POLL - Lewis jumped back into the USA Today Sports Division II Coaches Poll on Tuesday (Jan. 14) at No. 25. The Flyers have been receiving votes all season and were most recently ranked at No. 12 in the Nov. 26 poll.

BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER - Redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic), who has started in all 14 games, is averaging 35.0 minutes on the court, the second-most in the GLVC. Johnson missed the entire 2012-13 campaign due to a knee injury. 

BOTH HOOPS TEAMS RANKED - Lewis University is one of six NCAA Division II institutions that have men's and women's basketball programs in the Top-25.

SOPHOMORE SHINING BRIGHT – Brawner-Henley is the first Flyer to average a double-double since Julie Fruendt completed the 1983-84 season averaging 18.9 points and 10.1 rebounds. 

AMONG THE COUNTRY - Lewis tops the GLVC and rank No. 9 nationally in blocked shots, averaging 5.1 blocks-per-game and in rebounds, pulling down 44.5 rebounds-per-game. The Flyers lead the league in assists, dishing out 17.7 assists-per-game, while holding a 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. 

FLYING TO THE TOP – Brawner-Henley leads the country with 13 double-doubles in 14 contests this season, while ranking second in rebounds, averaging 13.1 rebounds-per-game. Brawner-Henley is second the GLVC in points (19.3 ppg.), while ranking third in blocked shots (2.1 bpg.). 

SHARING THE ROCK – All three of the Flyers starting guards are in the top-10 in the GLVC in assists. Nellen leads in the conference in assists, dishing out 5.1 assists-per-game. Johnson is sixth with 4.2 helpers-per-game while junior guard Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) sits in ninth, averaging 3.6 assists-per-game.

THREE FLYERS WITH 20-POINTS IN A GAME - Junior Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic), Itschner and Johnson's 20-point performances against Quincy on Jan. 5th marked the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Flyers have had three players score at least 20 points. Darcee Schmidt (23 pts.),  Mary Moskal (24 pts.) and Shante Glenn (20 pts.) all hit the mark in the Flyers' 95-85 victory at Ferris State on Dec. 21, 2005.

DOUBLE-TROUBLE – Brawner-Henley (31 pts., 17 rebs.) and Reinhart's (30 pts., 13 rebs.) double-doubles on Dec. 7th against Purdue Calumet marked the first time since the 2010 season that the Flyers had two players post double-doubles in the same game. Jenny Turpel (24 pts., 10 rebs.) and Lory Shaw (16 pts., 12 rebs.) collected their double-doubles in the Flyers 75-70 loss to Saginaw Valley on Nov. 12, 2010.
