INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Jennie Coughlon (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) scored the game wining goal for the Lewis women's soccer team with 2:02 remaining to help the Flyers defeat Indianapolis 3-2 on Sunday (Oct. 26) afternoon at Key Stadium. The Great Lakes Valley Conference victory puts the Flyers in a tie for seventh place in the GLVC with Quincy. A win on Wednesday at UW-Parkside in the regular season finale guarantees the Flyers a berth in the GLVC Tournament. A tie or loss opens the door for numerous tie breakers as McKendree, William Jewell and Maryville are all close behind the Flyers.

"Considering the injuries we had today, this really was a team effort," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "We had some freshmen get some big minutes. I thought everyone stepped up and gutted out a great comeback win."

Coughlon's goal came off the corner kick from another senior, Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic). The corner kick by Thomas set up Coughlon directly in front of the goal. Her goal also capped a furious comeback by the Flyers. Indianapolis scored the first two goals of the game. Taylor Cotherman (20') and Jocelyn Evans (27') had the tallies for the Greyhounds to put the Flyers down 2-0.

The Flyers' rally started 10 minutes after Evans' goal. It was junior Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) (37') with the goal for the Flyers, her fifth of the season. Junior Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) had an assist on the goal. Lewis tied it up in the second half on a goal Chavez, her sixth of the season, at 57:32. She dribbled from midfield and connected on a shot from 20 yards out into the corner of the goal. Chavez' goal tied the contest at two, but it was Coughlon's goal, her second of the season, with only minutes remaining and overtime looming that gave the Flyers the win.

"We struggled early to defend their group up top but nobody panicked and we realized the things we needed to do to adjust," Koenig said. "We went out and controlled the second half to get the goals we needed. We really showed a lot of character."

Lewis out-shot the Greyhounds 21-13. The Flyers also had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, with the eighth finally paying off in the game winning goal.

Lewis improves to 5-6-5 (5-5-4 GLVC) with the win. Indianapolis falls to 4-9-4 (3-7-4 GLVC).Wednesday's regular season finale at UW-Parkside will start at 3:30 p.m.
