Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) scored 20 of her career-high 24 points in the first half to help No. 9 Lewis women's basketball to a 101-62 victory over Upper Iowa in a non-conference game at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Nov. 22). The win is Lewis' 26
th consecutive home victory.
The last time Lewis scored 100 points in a non-overtime game was Dec. 16, 2003 when Lewis topped Saint Xavier 105-83.
Grayer was one of two Flyers to hit 20 points. She made 8-of-12 from the field in the first half including 4-of-5 from long range. She finished 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the game. Junior
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) totaled 22 points. Junior
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) recorded a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds.
It was a four-point game at 39-35 with 5:31 remaining in the first half when the Flyers went on a 19-9 run to close the half. Lewis led 58-44 at the break. The Flyers scored the first three baskets of the second half, each by different players, to go up 20 points. It started a second half that saw Lewis out-score the Peacocks 43-18. Lewis limited Upper Iowa to 5-of-30 shooting (16.7 percent) in the second half. Johnson scored more baskets (6) in the second half than Upper Iowa recorded as a team.
"I didn't think our defensive intensity was what it needed to be during the first 20," Lewis head coach
Lisa Carlsen said. "I thought we did a much better job coming out of the locker room and really increasing our intensity on the defensive end and that really transitions into a lot of good things for us on the offensive end."
For the game, Lewis finished at 50.7 percent (38-of-75) from the floor. Lewis scored 25 points off 21 Upper Iowa turnovers. The Flyers earned a 22-4 edge in fast break points.
Upper Iowa falls to 1-2 with the loss. Lewis improves to 3-0.When Lewis returns to the court it will be a little warmer outside the gym as the Flyers travel to Florida this weekend. First up is a contest against St. Edwards in a neutral site game at Rollins on Nov. 28. Tip is set for 2 p.m. CT.
