University Center, Mich. -
The 2014 season did not get off on the right foot for the No. 15 Lewis University men's soccer team, as host Saginaw Valley State posted two first half goals on their way to the 2-0 non-conference victory over the visiting Flyers in the season opener at Robert C. Braddock Field on Thursday (Sept. 4) afternoon.

"I thought we looked sloppy, lethargic and didn't want to play to start the game," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "As the game went on, I thought we played better."

With the win, SVSU improves to 1-0, while the Flyers are now 0-1 on the season.

SVSU senior midfielder Craig Neal opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the 12th minute on an assist from freshman midfielder Aleksander Isaevski. The Cardinals tacked on another tally at the 29:56 mark, as freshman forward Matthew Lang posted an unassisted score.

Cardinals goalkeeper Alex Bouillennec made five saves in goal to earn the shutout, while Flyer netminder Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) stopped three SVSU shots.

Lewis senior midfielder George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) and junior midfielder Luke Comerouski (Itasca, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy) each had two shots on goal to lead the Flyers offensively. SVSU outshot the Flyers, 14-8, while both teams recorded five shots on frame.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 6), as they head to Xenia, Ohio for a neutral non-conference showdown with Alderson Broaddus. Action is slated to begin at 1 PM ET.
