EVANSVILLE, Ind. - No. 1 Lewis women's basketball used a 10-0 run late in the first half to pull away for good from the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon. The Flyers won the Great Lakes Valley Conference road contest 83-73.

The visiting Flyers did most of their damage behind the arc, making 12-of-28 3-pointers. Lewis connected on eight in the first half with senior Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) making half of them. However it was senior Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) with five points in Lewis' 10-0 run from 4:46 to 2:33 in the first half that changed the game. Lewis led by as many as 22 points in the second half before Southern Indiana closed the lead to 10 on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Six Flyers finished in double-digits with senior Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) leading the way with 18 points. Grayer finished with 17 points thanks to three 3-pointers. Senior Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) and senior Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) both pitched in 12 points. Senior Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) and junior Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) both had 10 points.

"I liked the way we came ready to play," Lewis head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Southern Indiana is a talented team and I thought we were able to keep them in check for most of the game. We had some kids shoot the ball well today and that makes things easier especially on the road."

Lewis' 12 3-pointers is a season high and the most since recording 12 against Indianapolis in triple overtime last season. Lewis made 13 3-pointers against Southern Indiana last season.

The Flyers finished the game shooting 47.0 percent (31-of-66). Southern Indiana finished the contest 30-of-68, good for 44.1 percent.

Lewis improves to 19-0 (9-0 GLVC). Southern Indiana falls to 14-5 (6-3 GLVC).

The win is Lewis' 15 straight victory by 10 points or more. Only twice this season has Lewis won by less than 10 points. Lewis returns home on Thursday (Jan. 29) to face Saint Joseph's at 5:30 p.m.
