Lewis controlled much of the game, owning a 14-7 edge in shots.
At the 2:59 mark in the second overtime sophomore
Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) tried to punch in a loose ball in the box off a corner kick from a few feet out but a UIS defender kicked the ball away on the end line. It was one of Lewis' best chances in the contest.
Fuller finished with a match-high five shots. Junior
Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) added three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper
Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) made three saves to record the shutout.
"We did a lot of good things tonight," Lewis head coach
Chris Koenig said. "This is one of those results where you're close so many times and it feels like the goal is going to come. It was disappointing to not get the goal but we played cleaner in the back and were able to dictate things offensively. When you play this game long enough sometimes you feel like you deserve a different result but we needed to finish a goal tonight and didn't."
Lewis is now 5-3-2 (3-2-2 GLVC). UIS is 3-5-1 (2-3-1 GLVC). The Flyers continue play on Sunday (Oct. 4) in a noon kick at McKendree.
