QUINCY, Ill. - Lewis women's soccer saw their hopes for a 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship come to an end on Sunday (Nov. 1) following a loss in the quarterfinals to No. 14 Quincy 4-0. The Flyers entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Quincy was the No. 3 seed.

"We got beat by a better team today," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "I don't think we could have come into the postseason in a better place. I loved the leadership we had, I loved the way we prepared and unfortunately we just didn't have a very good day. It was a tough day to not play your best soccer."

The clubs played an even first 35 minutes and then in a span of 55 seconds, things changed for the Flyers. At 36:30, Maddy Kuhlenberg delivered a long cross from the goalkeeper's right that seemed to hug the endline and land a foot in front of the goal. All Abby Pulliam had to do was finish just inside the right post. At 37:15 Mackenzie Reif took a long pass and beat Lewis' keeper one-on-one to make the score 2-0. Bailey Gruebel had an assist on the tally.

It was the same 2-0 score until the 56th minute when it was Pulliam again, this time slipping the ball just under the crossbar on a goal assisted by Taylor Lindwedel. Quincy added a goal with 14 seconds remaining when Gabby Herrick scored on a header from Halee Hurnberger.

"In the locker room it was clear this loss is going to hurt for awhile," Koenig said. "But they can't let today define what this season was about. This group had a strong season and accomplished alot."

Senior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) had two shots for Lewis.

Lewis ends the 2015 campaign 10-7-2. Quincy improves to 13-3-3. Lewis' GLVC Tournament berth was the Flyers' third in four seasons.
