Kirksville, Mo. - The Truman State softball team flexed its muscles on Sunday (March 15) as the host Bulldogs recorded seven extra base hits - including three home runs - on their way to the 10-2 (6 inn.), 4-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Lewis University at the Truman Softball Park.
"We can't always depend on our pitchers," Lewis head softball coach
Becky Pearl said. "Sometimes we're going to have to pick it up for them offensively when things aren't going well."
With the sweep, Truman State improves to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in GLVC action, while the visiting Flyers fall to 11-8 on the campaign and 2-2 in conference play.
In the opener, TSU touched Lewis senior pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) for 10 runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Bowler (9-4) surrendered two home runs to Bulldog second baseman Andrea Klipsch (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 runs) and a solo homer to first baseman Liz Leath.TSU left fielder Ally McReynolds went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles and scored a run.
Lewis sophomore shortstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish for the Flyers and scored a run. Jaworski scored that run on a two-run homer by senior first baseman
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North), her fifth of the season. Ullrich was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
Truman State starting pitcher Kelsea Dorsey (7-1) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings of work while fanning five batters in the opener.
In the nightcap, Truman State broke a 2-all tie in the fourth inning on a RBI single by designated player Devin Gudehus to give the Bulldogs the 3-2 advantage. TSU added an insurance run in the fifth, as third baseman Whitney Richardson (2-for-3, RBI) roped a RBI double off of Lewis starting pitcher
Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy).
Schweickert (2-4) allowed three earned runs and five hits in six innings pitched, while striking out three batters. Her counterpart Kindra Henze (5-3) earned the complete-game victory, scattering two runs and seven hits in the win.
Jaworski went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Flyers offensively in game two.
Lewis opens its home campaign on Saturday (March 21), as the Flyers welcome No. 4 UMSL to the Lewis Softball Field for a 12 PM twinbill.
