Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team experienced both the ecstasy of victory and the agony of defeat against Maryville University, as the Flyers earned a walk-off 6-5 win in the opening game of their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader, before succumbing to an 8-run first inning in a 11-0 (5 inn.) loss to the Saints in the nightcap at the Lewis Softball Field on Sunday (March 22).
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with our performance today," Lewis head softball coach
Becky Pearl said. "From top to bottom, I thought we did not show the kind of team that we are more than capable of being."
With the split, Lewis is now 13-10 overall and 4-4 in GLVC action, while the Saints move to 7-14 on the campaign and 4-4 in conference play.
In the opener, Lewis took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning, before the Saints staged a four-run rally to tie the contest. Following a RBI single by Krystal Rock, the Saints tied the game on a base-clearing fielding error on Flyer center fielder
Justina Doll (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein).
Lewis responded in the bottom half of the frame, as freshman third baseman
Cori Reynolds (Lansing, Ill./TF South) connected for a one-out single and moved over to second on another single by sophomore shortstop
Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Flyer senior
Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) popped out, setting the stage for a game-winning, two-out double by freshman designated player
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport).
DeMasi went 3-for-3 at the dish to lead the Flyers offensively. Ullrich went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Jaworski was 2-for-4 with a run. Lewis freshman outfielder
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) roped a two-run single in the first inning.
Lewis senior pitcher
Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) earned the complete-game, five-hit victory for the Flyers. Bowler (10-4) struck out eight batters and allowed five runs - two earned - in the win. Maryville reliever Danielle Williams (7-12) took the loss for the Saints, as she gave up one run and three hits in 3.2 innings of relief.
The Saints did not waste any time in the nightcap, as they touched Lewis starting pitcher
Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) for eight runs and six hits in the first inning and did not look back. Maryville hit four home runs in game two, including two by Williams (2-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 runs).
In all, Schweickert (2-6) allowed 10 runs, 10 hits - including three home runs - and struck out one. Macias (4-5) picked up the complete-game win, surrendering five hits and striking out three batters.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 24), as the Flyers welcome Grand Valley State to the Lewis Softball Field for a 2 PM twinbill.
