PDF BoxROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 9 Lewis women's basketball earned their 12th straight win after a 76-47 victory over Southern Indiana on Thursday (Jan. 21) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis led for all but 33 seconds in the game, after multiple 7-0 runs in the first half propelled the Flyers to a 37-24 lead after the first two quarters. Freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) put away 14 points of her 18 points in the first half. Southern Indiana never threatened in the second half.
The Flyers scored 31 points off 21 USI turnovers and limited USI to 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field.
"We talked during the week about coming out strong and I was happy with that today," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "We didn't play our best basketball last weekend but I thought we bounced back well tonight."
Lewis shot 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the field. Senior
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) led all scorers with 20 points with 10-of-14 shooting in 25 minutes. Junior
Alyssa Siwek (Palos Heights, Ill./Mother McAuley) finished in double-digit points (10) and added a trio of three-pointers.
Lewis was out-rebounded 33-31, but held a 16-4 edge in second chance points.
The home squad improves to 17-1 (8-0 GLVC) on the season while Southern Indiana falls to 10-6 (3-5 GLVC).
The Flyers will be back at home on Saturday (Jan. 23) to face GLVC opponent Bellarmine. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena. Bellarmine enters Saturday's contest in second place behind the Flyers in the GLVC East Division. Saturday is also 1980's All-Decade Day as the best Flyers from the 1980's will be honored at halftime.
