Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) became the Great Lakes Valley Conference's all-time women's basketball rebound leader on Thursday (Feb. 11) during No. 7 Lewis' 68-62 victory over No. 20 Quincy at the Pepsi Arena.
Brawner-Henley made history after recording her 1,188
th career rebound at the 8:57 mark in the second quarter. She needed just three rebounds coming into tonight's matchup to break Sloan Haughey's 1,187 for Saint Joseph's from 1989-93. Brawner-Henley now owns 1,200 career rebounds.
The senior finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds for her 67
th career double-double. She was 13-of-17 from the floor to bring her career field goal total to 756, becoming Lewis' all-time leader in the category. She passed Darcee Schmidt, who previously held the record with 747 baskets from 2003-07. Brawner-Henley is also now fourth all-time in scoring at Lewis with 1,847 points.
"Mariyah was unbelievable tonight," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "She did everything, she was a beast. She might drive the bus to Truman tonight."
The teams battled back and forth for much of the first half, until an 8-0 second period run put the Flyers on top 28-21. The run was capped off when freshman
Kayla Brewer (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee School of Languages) drained a three-pointer at the 4:42 mark. The Flyers retained the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Hawks made a late run in the final minutes when a 7-0 Quincy push made it a 59-55 game with 1:30 remaining. However a layup by freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) with 1:08 remaining stopped the Quincy run. From there the Flyers sunk seven free throws to clinch the contest.
The Flyers shot 27-of-59 (45.8 percent) while limiting Quincy to 23-of-61 (37.7 percent) from the floor.
"It was a great team win on the road against a very well coached and extremely talented team," Gillespie said. "I thought we executed our defensive game plan really well."
Kelliher finished with 20 points and nabbed eight rebounds. Brewer added 10 points with two 3-pointers while adding six boards and three steals.
"I thought we had some really good contributions from Jess, Kayla and Tiana (Karopulos)," Gillespie said. "Alyssa (Siwek) was great down the stretch."
Thursday's victory clinches a first round bye in the GLVC Tournament for the Flyers.
With the win, the Flyers improve to 23-1 on the season and remain perfect (14-0) in GLVC play. The Hawks fall to 19-4 (10-4 GLVC). Thursday's win was Lewis' 18
th straight. The Flyers look to extend their win-streak on Saturday (Feb. 13) in a 1 p.m. start at Truman State. The contest will be Lewis' final regular season road game of the season.
