Clermont, Fla. -
Lewis University freshman pitcher Paige Fossey (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) turned in a valiant performance, but it was not enough as No. 16 West Virginia Wesleyan earned the 1-0 regional victory over the Flyer softball team in the opening day of the Spring Games at Legends Way 2 Field on Monday (Feb. 29) afternoon.

With the win, West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 6-0 on the campaign, while the Flyers are now 3-3 overall.

Fossey (0-2) went the distance for the Flyers, allowing just one run and eight hits while striking out three batters. She has allowed two earned runs in her first two collegiate starts in a Flyer uniform. Her counterpart Sayaka Foley earned the complete-game, three-hit shutout while fanning six.

West Virginia Wesleyan scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a RBI single by center fielder Tori Pogue (2-for-2).

Lewis sophomores Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick), Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) accounted for all three of the Flyer hits.
