Lewis Softball Splits With Quincy On Sunday Afternoon

Hawks take opener 5-4, while Flyers respond with 5-1 win in nightcap.

Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team snapped a five-game losing streak, behind a pair of Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) home runs, to defeat Quincy, 5-1, in the nightcap of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday (March 20) afternoon. Quincy (9-11, 4-4 GLVC) held on for the 5-4 win over the Flyers (12-13, 2-6 GLVC) in the opener.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 22), as the Flyers welcome Grand Valley State for a regional doubleheader. Action is set to begin at 2 PM.

WP: Bradley (2-1); LP: Fossey (3-4)
HR: Greene (6); Ledbetter (3)

Lewis' late attempt to rally from a four-run deficit fell short, as Quincy held on for the 5-4 victory over the Flyers in the opening game. The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead behind solo home runs from both junior shortstop Lindsey Greene and senior third baseman Samantha Ledbetter.
The Hawks tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double by junior second baseman Kaylee Jones and a RBI single from Greene (2-for-3, 2 RBI, run) to take a 5-1 lead over the Flyers.
Lewis cut that lead in half on a two-run double by sophomore right fielder Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 5-3. The Flyers added another tally in the bottom of the seventh on a Kasey Bradley wild pitch with two outs. Bradley, however, recovered and retired the Flyers on a Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) force out to end the game with the tying run at second base and the winning run on first.
Bradley earned the complete-game victory for the Hawks, scattering four runs - three earned - and six hits, while walking seven batters. Lewis starting pitcher Paige Fossey (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) allowed five runs and six hits in 4.2 innings of work, while fanning one batter.
Cairo topped the Flyers offensively, as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

GAME TWO

WP: Sanders (2-1); LP: Harbison (3-1)
HR: Jaworski 2 (3)

After struggling all weekend, Lewis junior shortstop Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) responded with a pair of solo home runs to help the Flyers to the 5-1 win over Quincy in the nightcap. Entering game two, Jaworski was 1-for-11 (.091) in the three prior contests.
Jaworski (2-for-4, 2 run, 2 RBI) broke up a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff homer and added another solo blast in the fifth inning to put the Flyers ahead for good at 4-0.
After Jaworski's initial homer, the Flyers tacked on two more runs on a Quincy passed ball and on a RBI single by junior center fielder Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North). Lewis also received a RBI double from senior catcher Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) and two hits from sophomore left fielder Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist).
Lewis freshman pitcher Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) claimed the complete-game victory, allowing one run and five hits, while fanning six. Her counterpart Tiffany Harbison took the loss for the Hawks, surrendering five runs - three earned - and six hits while striking out five batters in five innings.
