Ashland, Ohio - The 2016-17 campaign has come to an end for the Lewis University women's basketball team as third-seeded Saginaw Valley State handed the sixth-seeded Flyers a 70-66 defeat in the NCAA Midwest Regional Quarterfinals - hosted by Ashland University - at Kates Gymnasium on Friday (March 10).
Lewis redshirt senior guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted a team-high 21 points, including two three-pointers, to pace the Flyer offense.
Flyer freshman forward
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) was 7-for-8 from the field and finished with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Lewis sophomore forward
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) had 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal in the loss.
Saginaw Valley (23-7) advances to the NCAA Midwest Region Semifinals, while the Flyers end their season with a record of 23-9.
Lewis was in foul trouble for much of the game and the Cardinals took advantage. SVSU shot 92.9% from the charity stripe, knocking down 26-of-28 free throws. The Cardinals also scored 18 points off of 12 Flyer turnovers.
The Flyers shot 45.6% (26-for-57) from the field and 50% (5-for-10) from three-point range, while the Cardinals knocked down 38.8% (19-for-49) of their shots and 40% (6-for-15) of their long distance attempts.
