Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team kept the momentum going, picking up its eighth straight win Thursday (Jan. 18), 71-57 over Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Neil Carey Arena.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North)Â totaled 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds to pick up her sixth double-double of the season.
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, while
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) had 10 points and two blocks and
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) tallied nine points on 3-for-3 shooting beyond the arc.
The Flyers outrebounded the Hawks 35-30 for the game. Lewis shot 21-for-47 (44.7%) from the floor, while Rockhurst shot 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the floor.
Jillian Meyers led the Hawks with 19 points.
The win moves the Flyers to 15-4 overall, 8-1 in the GLVC, while Rockhurt falls to 7-9, 3-5 in GLVC.
After falling behind 12-10 early, a Kelliher three-point play gave the Flyers the lead for good at the 4:59 mark of the first quarter. It sparked an 8-0 burst that gave the hosts an 18-12 lead.
The Flyers went on an other 8-0 run late in the first quarter and early in the second to take a 26-15 lead. A third Black three-pointer at the 6:12 mark of the first half gave Lewis a 32-20 lead and the lead would remain at 12 at the half, 36-24.
The lead grew to as many as 14 points in the third quarter before Lewis held a 50-39 advantage after three.
Rockhurst went on an 8-1 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to get within four at 51-47, but Lewis answered with seven straight points from Kelliher to rebuild its double-digit lead.
A pair of Hawk free throws put the lead back to nine points momentarily before a Kelliher basket gave Lewis a double-digit lead it would maintain for the rest of the game.
Lewis is back at Neil Carey Arena Saturday when it plays host to William Jewell for a 1 PM tip. During halftime of the game, Lewis will recognize its All-Decades Team from the 2000s.
