SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The 22nd ranked Lewis women's volleyball team picked up a big win on Friday night sweeping Illinois Springfield at The TRAC Center in Springfield, Ill. The win is the fourth in a row for the Flyers (20-6, 11-3 GLVC) and sixth in their last seven games.

The Prairie Stars (21-5, 12-2 GLVC) entered Friday's game ranked fifth in the first NCAA-II Midwest Region poll while Lewis was ranked eighth.

The Flyers began the match on fire racing out to a 5-1 lead and never trailed in the opening set. They hit .324 in the frame while holding UIS to .061 hitting percentage. Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) recorded seven of her match-high 17 kills in the stanza.

The Prairie Stars never got closer than two points in the set as Lewis pulled away midway through the frame on its way to a 25-13 victory.

The second stanza was the closest of the match with seven ties and three lead changes. UIS held an 8-6 lead after an attack error by Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) but the Flyers responded with a 9-3 run to take the lead for good. Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) had two kills in that run while Goodman and Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) added one each. Hyland and Goodman each had service aces in the run as well.

Lewis extended its lead to as many as nine points in the frame and would go onto win the set 25-16.

The final stanza was tied at nine when the Flyers began to pull away thanks to a 9-2 run. Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had a pair of service aces in that run while Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) added two kills and Becker and Goodman had a kill apiece.

Illinois Springfield cut the Lewis lead to 21-18 after back-to-back miscues by the Flyers. After a timeout, Lewis scored the final four points getting a kill from Hyland and three straight kills from Goodman to win 25-18.

The Flyers finished the contest with a hitting percentage of .305 (47 kills/11 errors/118 total attacks). Goodman was joined in double figures by Hyland with 12 kills. Becker distributed 33 assists while Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had 14 diggs.

The Lewis defense held the Prairie Stars to a .124 attack percentage (28 kills/14 errors/113 totals attacks) and didn't allow a UIS player to reach double figures in kills. Taylor Bauer had eight kills off the bench to lead the Prairie Stars. Tiffany Wentworth finished with 21 assists while Jailyn Borum had a match-high 18 digs.

The Flyers are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 3 p.m.
