Flyers Drop Exhibition Contest To Top Ranked Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Lewis' women's basketball team dropped its exhibition opener at top ranked Notre Dame 107-65 at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend on Tuesday evening.

The Flyers were led by Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) with 17 points while Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 16 points and Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) finished with 11. Kelliher and Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) had six rebounds apiece and Green dished out four assists.

Notre Dame, the defending national champions, scored the first 10 points of the contest and never saw its lead dip below six points.

After its slow start, Lewis got to within 18-12 on back-to-back three-pointers from Hinders but the Fighting Irish responded with an 8-3 run to end the first quarter with a 26-15 lead.

Notre Dame extended its run to open the second quarter stretching its lead to 33-18 on a layup b Jessica Shepard.

The Flyers fought back to within nine points thanks to an 8-2 run of their own. Hinders and Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) hit back-to-back threes and Kelliher hit a jumper in the paint to make the score 35-26.

The Irish ended the first half on a 16-5 run to head into the locker room with a 51-31 lead.

Notre Dame controlled the third quarter outscoring Lewis 29-10 to extend its lead to 80-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Lewis opened the final quarter with a 17-8 run to cut the Irish lead to 88-58 on an old fashioned three-point play by Hinders. The Flyers were only outscored by three in the final quarter.

Lewis ended the game shooting 38 percent (23-for-61) from the field, went 8-of-20 from three and shot 65 percent (11-for-17) at the foul line.

The Irish finished the game shooting 58 percent (42-of-73), was 1-for-8 from three and shot 73 percent (22-for-30) from the foul line.

The Flyers travel to Evanston on Sunday to take on Northwestern in an exhibition game beginning at 2 p.m.
