No. 15 Flyers Clip Southern Indiana 3-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 15th ranked Lewis women's volleyball team snapped its two match road losing streak with a 3-1 win at Southern Indiana on Friday evening. Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) had 48 assists, 20 digs and six kills to lead the way for the Flyers (14-4, 7-2 GLVC).

Lewis led wire-to-wire in the opening set racing out to an early 10 point lead in the frame after a kill from Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg). Southern Indiana (8-11, 2-9 GLVC) cut the deficit to six at 22-16 but that was the closest it got as the Flyers scored three of the final four points to win the stanza 25-17.

Lewis recorded 19 kills and hit .197 in the frame and also had an ace and two blocks.

The Flyers controlled the second set hitting .268 in the frame and recording 15 kills, two service aces and three blocks. Lewis built an early five point advantage only to see the Screaming Eagles come back and even things at 10. The Flyers regained the lead thanks to a 6-1 run and wouldn't see its lead dip below three points the rest of the stanza as they pulled away for a 25-17 win.

Southern Indiana refused to go quietly as it fought back to win the third set by the score of 25-22. The Screaming Eagles outhit Lewis .179-to-.167 and took advantage of eight Flyer attack errors in the frame. The Flyers held a 13-11 lead in the frame but USI responded with an 8-1 run to build a five point lead. Lewis cut the lead to two points a couple of times late in the frame but were unable to complete the comeback.

The fourth set was tied at nine when the Flyers went on a 7-0 run to gain some separation. Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had two kills in that run while Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) added a pair of aces. Once again, USI fought back to within 17-16 after a kill from Taylor Litteken. Lewis stretched its lead to 21-17 but the Eagles clawed back to within 22-20. The Flyers were able to close out the match scoring the final three points on kills from Preuss, Becker and Stefanon.

Hyland finished with a match-high 19 kills while Stefanon added 16 and Preuss added 15. Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) also added six kills and two assisted blocks. Hyland led five players in double figures with 21 digs. Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) added 19 digs, Jamie Popped finished with 18 and Preuss had 13 digs.

Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .206 (68 kills/26 errors/204 total attacks).

The Flyers head to Louisville, Ky., on Saturday to take on Bellarmine at 2 p.m. (CT).
