MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Lewis men's basketball team dropped a 77-59 decision at Northern Michigan on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers fall to 1-1 on the year while the Wildcats move to 2-0.
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin) was the lone player to reach double figures for Lewis scoring 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds and distributing three assists.
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) added nine points and five rebounds
while
Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison) and
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) added eight points each.
The Flyers shot 42 percent (25-for-60) from the field, hit 5-of-15 attempts from three and shot 58 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded Northern Michigan 36-29 in the contest but turned the ball over 12 times leading to 18 points for the Wildcats.
Northern Michigan shot 57 percent (16-for-28) and was 6-of-10 from three in the opening half. The Wildcats cooled off in the second half only shooting 39 percent from the floor but still finished the contest connecting on 25-of-51 attempts from the field and ended up shooting 50 percent from three.
Isiah Johnson finished with a game-high 33 points while Naba Echols added 15 points.
A three-pointer from Reinhart cut the Northern Michigan lead to 19-17 midway through the opening half. The Wildcats took control from there as they outscored Lewis 24-7 over the final 10 minutes to take a 43-24 lead into the locker room.
The Flyers cut the lead to 52-37 eight minutes into the second half but Northern Michigan responded with a 20-10 run over the next 7:30 minutes to build its largest lead of the contest at 25 points.
Lewis outscored the Wildcats 12-5 over the final 4:30 to cut the final margin to 18 points.
The Flyers host Benedictine in their home opener on Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m.
