HAMMOND, Ind. – The Lewis women's basketball team had 11 different players score in its 92-53 win at Purdue Northwest on Tuesday evening in Hammond, Ind.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led the way with 26 points while
Allison Utterback (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) added a career-high 11 points off the bench.
The Flyers (4-1) shot 46 percent (33-for-72) from the floor in the contest and knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers and shot 78 percent at the foul line in the victory over the Pride (1-3). Lewis outrebounded Purdue Northwest 50 to 37 in the contest and recorded 26 assists on its 33 made field goals.
The Flyers never trailed in the game as they opened with a 10-0 run and never let the Pride get closer than eight points in the game. Kelliher and
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) combined to score the first 12 points of the game and Lewis held Purdue Northwest scoreless for nearly the first four minutes.
The Flyers extended their lead to 24-8 with another 10-0 run with 2:27 left in the opening quarter. The Pride cut the deficit to 14 on a jumper from Shae Rhonehouse but Lewis responded ending the quarter scoring seven of the final nine points to take a 31-12 advantage into the second quarter.
The Flyers carried that momentum into the second quarter scoring the first nine points to build its largest lead of the half at 40-12 after a layup from
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston). Purdue Northwest made a little run scoring eight of the next 10 points to cut the deficit to 42-20 after a free from Rhonehouse but Kelliher hit two free throws in the closing seconds of the half to give Lewis a 44-20 lead at the half.
The two sides traded points for the first 90 seconds of the third quarter before the Flyers seized control with five straight points to extend its halftime lead to 53-26 after a layup from Kelliher. The Pride cut the lead to 58-39 after a basket from Tayler Vaunters with 3:33 left in the frame. Lewis closed the quarter strong scoring 13 of the final 18 points to take a 27 point lead into the final quarter.
The Flyers dominated the final 10 minutes outscoring them 21-to-9 as Utterback and
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) teamed up to score 15 points. Utterback scored eight of her 11 points in the quarter while Gardner added all seven of hers. Lewis built its largest lead of the game at 92-50 on a three-pointer from
Alyssa Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Jones Prep) with 1:17 left in the contest.
The Flyer defense held Purdue Northwest to just 29 percent (18-for-63) in the contest, 5-of-24 shooting from downtown and forced 20 turnovers in the contest which resulted in 24 points for Lewis.
Rhonehouse led the Pride with 13 points off the bench while Tayler Vaunters added 10 off the bench.
The Flyers are back at home on Sunday afternoon taking on Ferris State at 1 p.m.
