KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Lewis women's volleyball team claimed a share of the GLVC regular season championship with a sweep at Truman State on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers (24-6, 15-3 GLVC) extended their winning streak to a season-high eight matches and finished in a three-way tie atop the standings with Drury and Illinois Springfield.

Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished with a match-high 14 kills to lead Lewis while Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) added 10 and Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) finished with nine to go along with 38 assists and five digs.

The Flyers hit .252 (52 kills/13 errors/155 total attacks) in the match while holding the Bulldogs (21-10, 10-8 GLVC) to a .171 hitting percentage.

Lewis led by as many as five points in the opening set but the Bulldogs were able to get within 18-16 after a service error by Hyland. The Flyers responded with a 5-2 run to push their lead back to five. Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) had a pair of kills in the run while Becker and Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) added a kill each.

Truman trimmed the deficit to 23-19 but Lewis got a kill from Preuss to get to set point and then Hyland and Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) teamed up to block Jocelynn Livingston to win the opener 25-19.

The Flyers raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set but the Bulldogs weathered the storm and came back to take a 16-15 lead on a kill from Ellie Kaat. Lewis responded with a 7-2 run of its own to regain and extend the lead to 22-18. Stefanon had a pair of kills in the run while Becker, Wilhelm, Hyland and Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had a kill apiece.

The Flyers reached set point at 24-19 after a Truman error but the Bulldogs held off two set points before Becker knocked down a kill to give Lewis a 25-21 in the stanza.

The finale saw the Flyers build a 14-8 lead near the midway point of the set but Truman refused to go away responding with a 13-6 run to gain the lead at 21-20 on a kill by Morgan Smith. Lewis got back-to-back kills from Wilhelm and Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) to regain the lead at 22-21. Natalie Brimeyer evened things back up at 22-all with a kill.

Goodman and Hyland then teamed up to record three straight kills to close out the match and give the Flyers a 25-22 victory.

Lewis heads to East Peoria for the GLVC Tournament beginning on Thursday. Times and opponents will be announced once they become available.
