ROMEOVILLE – The Lewis men's basketball team shot 54 percent (15-for-28) in the second half to defeat the 19th ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds 84-71 at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon. The win was the second straight over a ranked foe for the Flyers (5-1, 1-0 GLVC) and handed the Greyhounds (6-1, 0-1 GLVC) their first loss of the season.
The two sides went back-and-forth in the first 11 minutes until UIndy went on a 7-2 run to build its largest lead of the game 26-22 on a jumper from Jimmy King with 6:19 left in the half.
After a timeout, Lewis responded with a 13-4 to take its biggest lead of the half at 35-30 on layup in transition from
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin).
The 'Hounds though cut the lead to three at the break after a pair of free throws from CJ Hardaway.
Jesse Kempson hit a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half to tie the game before
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) put the Flyers ahead for good with a dunk off an assist from
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame).
The two sides continued battling back-and-forth as UIndy cut the lead to 43-42 after a layup from Marcus Latham with 16:09 left in the game.
Lewis ran off nine straight points to build a 52-42 lead over the next two minutes.
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) hit a three to make it a four-point game and then
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) scored six straight points. Reinhart hit a three and then completed an old-fashioned three-point play.
The Greyhounds battled back to within five at 59-54 after a pair of free throws from Tye Wilburn with 8:34 but that would be the closest they got as responded with a 9-2 run to extend their lead back to double digits.
UIndy made one final push cutting the deficit to seven with less than four minutes to play after a three-pointer from Jordache Mavunga.
The Flyers finished the game strong outscoring the 'Hounds 14-8 the rest of the way for the final margin.
Lewis shot 48 percent (30-for-63) from the field while shooting nearly 50 percent from the three-point line and 77 percent at the foul line. Blaylock led five Flyers in double figures with 17 points while McCullum and Reinhart added 16 points apiece.
Kempson led all scorers with 21 points and he was joined in double figures by Hardaway and Mavunga with 15 points apiece. Indianapolis finished the game shooting 44 percent (25-of-57) from the floor, shot only 23 percent from downtown and 73 percent at the foul line.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 4) hosting Indiana University Northwest at 7:30 p.m.
