MARQUETTE, Mich. – In a game of runs, the sixth ranked Lewis women's basketball team had the biggest one ending the game with 10 straight points to overcome a nine-point deficit and defeat Northern Michigan 58-50 on Monday in Marquette, Mich. The win was the eighth in a row for the Flyers (8-1) and avenged their loss to the Wildcats (9-3) in the season opener.
Lewis got off to rough start falling behind 8-0 before
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) hit a pair of free throws to put Lewis on the board. Northern Michigan stretched its lead to 14-6 after Sydney Dillinger went 1-of-2 with 3:13 to play in the opening quarter.
The Flyers countered with five straight points on a three from
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and a basket from
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) to cut the lead to 14-11 but Amber Huebner's layup in the closing seconds gave the Wildcats a five-point lead at the quarter break.
Northern Michigan shot 78 percent (7-for-9) from the field in the opening quarter.
Lewis opened the second quarter scoring six of the first nine points to even the game at 19 on a jumper from Williams less than three minutes into the frame. The Wildcats responded with an 8-2 run of their own over the next five minutes to regain the lead 27-21 on a three from Baleigh Delorit.
Williams answered right back with a three to cut the deficit in half but NMU answered getting layups from Jessica Schultz and Darby Youngstrom to build a 31-24 lead with 1:08 to play in the half.
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) brought the Flyers back to within five hitting a jumper with 0:46 left in the half.
Lewis heated up in the second quarter shooting 47 percent to finish the half going 11-for-28 (39 percent) from the floor.
The Flyers opened the third quarter on a 7-3 run to cut the Wildcat lead to 34-33 on Williams third three-pointer of the contest. The Wildcats responded once again rattling off eight straight to build its largest lead of the game at 42-33 on a layup by Lexi Smith nearly midway through the quarter.
Lewis closed the quarter strong scoring seven of the final nine points to cut the lead to 44-40 heading into the final stanza.
The Flyers carried that momentum into the fourth quarter scoring eight of the first 11 points to take their first lead of the game on a free throw from Kelliher with 6:08 left in the contest. Northern Michigan responded with a layup from Youngstrom and a free throw from Erin Honkala to regain the lead at 50-48 with 4:26 to go in the contest.
Lewis dominated the rest of the way holding the Wildcats scoreless over the final four-plus minutes and scored 10 straight points.
Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) hit a layup to tie the game and then Kelliher put the Flyers ahead for good with a layup.
Kelliher added another layup to put them up four and then Lockett hit a layup with 3:10 to play to make it a two-possession game. Lewis sealed the game at the line hitting two free throws in the final minute.
NMU missed its final seven shots of the game.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 45.1 percent (23-for-51) and was 7-of-10 from the field in the fourth quarter. Kelliher finished with a game-high 18 points and was joined in double figures by Williams with 13 and Lockett with 12.
After its hot start, the Wildcats were held to just 30 percent (13-for-44) over the final three quarters. They also shot just 39 percent (5-for-13) at the foul line. Schultz, Delorit and Honkala had nine points each while Smith finished with eight.
Lewis returns to action on Monday, Dec. 31, when it hosts St. Francis at 1 p.m.
