ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer men's basketball team locked down in the second half to defeat Wisconsin-Parkside 71-57 at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) led three Flyers (12-13, 7-8 GLVC) in double figures with 14 points.
Lewis opened the game with a 7-1 run but the Rangers (9-15, 7-7 GLVC) quickly responded with an 18-7 run to take its largest lead of the contest just past the midway point of the opening half. The Flyers came back to take a 21-19 lead after a three-pointer from
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) but Parkside ended the first half on a 7-2 run to take a 26-23 lead into the locker room.
Lewis shot 44 percent (10-for-23) from the floor in the first 20 minutes but turned the ball over 10 times resulting in 11 points for the Rangers. Bell led the Flyers with seven points off the bench while
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) and
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) added four points each.
Parkside ended the first half also shooting 44 percent (11-for-25) from the field and was 3-for-10 from beyond the arc. Goran Zagorac led all scorers with 10 points while Espen Fjaerestad and Ramar Evans added six and five points respectively.
Lewis opened the second half on an 18-7 run to regain the lead and wouldn't relinquish it. The Rangers got as close as six before the Flyers responded with a 16-4 run over a four minute stretch to build a 57-39 lead after a layup from Bell with 7:26 remaining.
Parkside wouldn't get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Lewis shot 59 percent (17-for-29) from the floor in the second half.
Pischke poured in 11 of his 14 points in the second half. Blaylock and
Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) added 11 points each while Bell finished with nine off the bench. The Flyers finished the game shooting 52 percent (27-of-52) from the floor, was 7-for-14 from three and outrebounded the Rangers 36-to-20.
Parkside finished the game shooting 46 percent (23-of-50) from the field, was 6-for-21 from the perimeter and shot only 46 percent at the foul line. Zagorac led three Rangers in double figures with 16 points while Evans and Fjaerestad added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Lewis returns to the hardwood next Thursday as it travels to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury at 7:45 p.m.
