ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team finished the regular season strong, picking up its fourth straight win and seventh in the past nine games with a 73-52 win over Southern Indiana Saturday (Feb. 24) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Neil Carey Arena.
With the win the Flyers finished the regular season with a 15-13 record, 10-8 in the GLVC, while Southern Indiana falls to 20-10Â overall, 11-7Â in the GLVC. The Flyers avenged an early season overtime loss to the Screaming Eagles.
Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) poured in 17 points to go along with 14 rebounds in his final home game.
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) also contributed 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) tallied 13 points, while
Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) in his final home game scored 11. Junior
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) also finished the game with nine points.
The Flyers shot 28-for-54 from the floor for the game (51.9%), while USI went 22-of-57 (38.6%) from the floor.
Lewis ran out to a 9-2 lead less than four minutes into the game and kept the lead until the 10:58 mark of the first half when a USI basket gave it a 15-14 lead. The Flyers then used a 9-0 spurt behind five points from Wilson to take a 27-19 advantage with 5:44 left in the half. A three-pointer by Oliver gave the Flyers a 35-25 lead at the half.
The Screaming Eagles closed the deficit to six points at 44-38 with 13:11 left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get. Lewis came right back as a Pischke jumper ignited a 19-7 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.
Next up for Lewis will be a trip to the GLVC Tournament where they will open up play in quarterfinal action Friday on the campus of Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. The opponent and game time has yet to be determined.
