ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball will take on the Truman State Bulldogs in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers (22-6, 15-3 GLVC) enter the tournament as the third seed while the Bulldogs (15-10) are seeded sixth.
Lewis is making its 10
th straight appearance and 32
nd overall in the conference tournament which is the second most behind Bellarmine's 35. The Flyers have won five GLVC Tournament championships which is tied for second with Southern Indiana and Saint Joseph's College. Lewis has played in the conference tournament championship game three times in the last seven seasons. The Flyers won the title in 2011 and 2013 and finished as runner-ups last year. Northern Kentucky won eight GLVC Tournament titles before classifying to Division I after the 2011-12 season.
Thursday's contest will be the second meeting of the season between the two schools with Lewis picking up a 73-58 win in Kirksville on Jan. 6. The Flyers outscored the Bulldogs 41-25 in the second and third quarters to pull away for the victory.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) had 26 points to lead three Lewis players in double figures, while Katie Jaseckas scored 16 to lead Truman State.
The Flyers lead the all-time series against the Bulldogs 5-1, however, Truman has won the lone match-up in the GLVC Tournament when it beat Lewis 84-70 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 GLVC Tournament at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs (15-10, 10-8 GLVC) won five straight to end the regular season and played their way into the tournament. This will be Truman's fifth straight appearance in the tournament since joining the GLVC in 2013-14. The Bulldogs won the GLVC Tournament defeating Maryville in the championship game.
Jaseckas, the GLVC Freshman of the Year, leads Truman in scoring, the first freshman to do so in 10 years, at 11.3 points per game. Rachel Edmundson and Sloane Totta, both third team All-GLVC selections, are averaging 8.3 and 6.6 points per game respectively.
