Flyers gear up for split weekend

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team gears up for a split weekend as it travels to St. Louis on Thursday to take on the Maryville Saints at 5:30 p.m. and then return home on Saturday to take on Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m.

The Flyers (18-5, 11-2 GLVC) bounced back from their first loss at Neil Carey Arena last Thursday with a 73-61 win against McKendree on Saturday. Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) led three players in double figures with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting and was 4-for-6 from downtown. Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) added a career-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) finished with 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Lewis ranks second in the GLVC in scoring at 73.7 points per game and are first in the league in field goal percentage shooting 46.6 percent from the floor. The Flyers also lead the league in assists dishing out 15.6 per game and is ranked first in the three-point defensive field goal percentage and defensive field goal percentage holding their opposition to 27.7 percent shooting from the perimeter and 37.5 percent shooting from the field.

Kelliher continues to lead Division II in scoring averaging nearly 25 points per game. She is joined in double figures by Hinders at 12.1 points per outing. Kelliher also leads the team in rebounding with 8.1 boards per contest while Green is tied for the league lead in assists with 4.5 per contest.

ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints enter Thursday's contest with a mark of 7-12, 4-9 GLVC but have won three of their last five contests. In their last outing they rallied from a 10-point deficit midway through the second quarter to pick up a 70-63 win at Indianapolis last Saturday.

Mary Barton led five players in double figures with 17 points in the contest while Ali Ringering, the team's leading scorer at 13.9 per contest, dropped in 16. Adrienne Horn added 11 points, Kayla Steward and Amanda Ponce finished with 10 points each.

Maryville leads the conference in free throw shooting making 79.2 percent of its attempts.

Ringering is one of four Saints averaging double figures and is joined by Steward at 12.2 per contest, Stephanie Sherwood is dropping home 11.6 per outing and Barton is adding 10.9 per game. Sherwood leads the team in rebounding at 5.1 per contest while Barton has dished out a team-high 67 assists.

ABOUT WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE: The Rangers enter Thursday's contest at Quincy with a record of 8-16, 4-8 GLVC after having its two-game winning streak snapped by Missouri-St. Louis 77-63 last Saturday in Somers, Wis.

Parkside leads the GLVC in three-point field goals made with 8.3 per contest. It's shooting only 31 percent from three on the season but they've shot it better in conference play knocking down 33 percent of its attempts.

Ali Bettencourt leads the Rangers in scoring at 15.1 points per contest and is joined in double figures by Carolina Rahkonen and Hayley Maystead with 12.0 and 10.4 points per game respectively. Maystead and Rahkonen are the top rebounders averaging 6.0 and 5.6 rebounds per game respectively. Bettencourt has dished out a team best 56 assists.
