ASHLAND, Ohio – The Lewis Flyer women's basketball dropped a hard fought defensive battle to the Drury Lady Panthers 63-49 on Saturday night at Kates Gymnasium in Ashland, Ohio. The Flyers end their season with a record of 24-8 while Drury improves to 31-2 and advances to Monday's Midwest Regional championship against either Ashland or Grand Valley State.
Lewis finished the game shooting 42 percent (20-for-48) from the floor, was only 2-of-13 from three and shot 58 percent at the foul line.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) finished with a double-double recording 18 points and 14 rebounds while
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 10 points and five rebounds. Kelliher moved to second on the school's all-time scoring list passing Darcee Schmidt and Mariyah Brawner-Henley. She's now scored 1,986 points in her career.
Lewis led for a majority of the first half leading by as many as six points on multiple occasions and shot 45 percent (10-for-22) from the floor. The game changed though when
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) left due to injury midway through the first quarter and didn't return. They held the Lady Panthers to just seven field goals in the first 20 minutes but Drury was able to hang in the game by making 9-of-11 at the foul line.
The Flyers led 24-18 after a jumper from
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) with 3:01 left in the half but Drury closed the half on an 8-1 run highlighted by a pair of three's from Alice Heinzler to head into the locker room with a 26-25 lead.
The two sides traded baskets to begin the second half but the Lady Panthers were able to grab a three-point lead on a layup by Lucia Fernandez. Lewis responded with three's from
Reilly Olmstead (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) to take its first lead of the second half and would carry that lead into the final quarter.
The Flyers led 45-43 after a layup from Hinders with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter but Drury scored 12 straight points to take its biggest lead of the game. Hailey Diestelkamp had six points in that run while Fernandez added four. The Flyers went cold in the final five minutes making only one field goal and was outscored 20-4 the rest of the way.
Lewis was held to a season-low 49 points while the 63 points scored by the Lady Panthers were tied for the second fewest it's scored in a game this season.
The Lady Panthers were held to only 33 percent (17-for-51) shooting in the contest. They were 3-of-16 from three but shot 90 percent at the foul line. Diestelkamp led Drury with 18 points while Heinzler finished with 13. The Lady Panthers outrebounded Lewis 36-to-29 and turned 22 Flyer turnovers into 26 points.
