SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The sixth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 with a sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Classic on Friday afternoon.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led four Flyers in double figures with a career-high 22 kills.
Lewis won a marathon first set 40-38 scoring the final two points of the set. Each side had multiple opportunities to win the opener but it was the Flyers who closed it out getting back-to-back kills from
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and Preuss. Lewis hit .232 and had 29 kills in the opening frame but committed 10 attack errors to just four for the Toros (0-1).
The Flyers led wire-to-wire in the second stanza on its way to a 25-16 victory. Lewis had 22 kills in the second set compared to seven for Cal State Dominguez Hills and led by as many as nine points in frame. Preuss and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had seven kills apiece in the stanza.
After falling behind early in set three, the Flyers pulled away building an eight-point lead midway through the frame. The Toros got as close as five points on multiple occasions but Lewis was able to close it out scoring the final four points of the match. Hyland had four kills in the final set to lead the Flyers.
Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .291. Preuss was joined in double figures by Hyland with 13 kills while
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added 11 and Stefanon finished with 10.
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) handed out 47 assists and
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had 19 digs.
Tati Yandall and Rylee Brown led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 14 and 11 kills respectively. Kalani Patrick dished out 17 assists while Cathryn Lopez finished with 20 digs. The Toros finished the match with a hitting percentage of .204.
The Flyers are back in action later on Friday taking on the host Cal State San Marcos at 8 p.m. (CDT).
