SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The sixth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team concluded its trip to California with a sweep of Indiana (Pa.), 25-16, 25-21, 25-16, on Saturday morning at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Classic in San Marcos, Calif.
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls),
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Flyers opened the match hitting .294 (14 kills/4 errors/34 total attacks) and led wire-to-wire to defeat the Crimson Hawks (0-3) 25-16 in the opening set. Lewis scored the first three points of the match and led by as many as nine points in the stanza.
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) led the Flyers with five kills while Stefanon added four.
Lewis fell behind 7-0 in the middle set but overcame the deficit thanks to a 9-1 run. The two sides traded points halfway through the frame before the Flyers took control scoring six straight points to turn a 16-15 deficit into a 21-16 lead. IUP cut the Lewis lead to 22-20 on a service ace from Liv Burns but the Flyers were able to close out the set getting kills from Becker and
Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) to win 25-21.
Lewis broke a 4-4 tie with four straight points early in set three and wouldn't look back. The lead grew to 20-8 before the Crimson Hawks began pecking away at the deficit thanks to an 8-1 run. The Flyers snuffed out the rally scoring four of the final five points of the match to complete the sweep. Hyland, Preuss and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) each had a kill in that final run while
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) added an ace.
Lewis finished the match with a .265 hitting percentage (39 kills/12 errors/102 total attacks) and had 11 aces in the match led by Goodman with six. Hyland led the Flyers with nine kills while Stefanon added eight and Goodman finished with five. Becker distributed 18 assists and Hyland had 10 digs.
The Lewis defense held IUP to a .111 attack percentage (32 kills/20 errors/108 total attacks) for the match. Kylie Osborn led all players with 11 kills and Sammi Brown added eight kills. Dominica Niccolai handed out 27 helpers while Jess Marut had 19 digs.
The Flyers return to action next Friday (Aug. 31) in Denver at the Colorado Premiere Challenge. The Flyers will face 15
th ranked West Florida at 12 p.m. (CDT) and 22
nd ranked Central Missouri at 7 p.m. (CDT) at Metropolitan State University-Denver.
