ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The fifth ranked Lewis women's volleyball ran its win streak to five with a 3-1 win over Bellarmine on Friday night at Neil Carey Arena.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led the Flyers (10-2, 4-0 GLVC) with a career-high 23 kills while
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) (12 kills and 13 digs) and
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) (53 assists and 10 digs) recorded double-doubles.
Lewis never trailed in the opening set and began to pull away midway through thanks to an 8-2 run extending their lead from one point to six points at 19-13. The Knights (7-5, 1-3 GLVC) cut the deficit to 21-18 after a bad set from Becker but the Flyers closed it out scoring four of the last five points to win 25-19. Lewis had a hitting percentage of .303 in the set. Preuss recorded six kills to lead the way.
The Flyers broke an early tie in the second set with an 8-3 run to build a five-point advantage. Bellarmine wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the stanza as Lewis pulled away for a 25-15 victory hitting .452 percent in the frame and recording 15 kills to go along with three blocks and 16 digs. Preuss had five kills against zero errors in 10 chances while Hyland and
Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) had four kills apiece.
The Flyers led by five points midway through set three but the Knights refused to go away thanks to a 9-4 run highlighted by three kills from Katie Adams. Lewis led 21-19 after a kill from
Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) forced Bellarmine to take its final timeout of the set. The Knights responded after the timeout scoring five straight points to grab a 24-21 advantage.
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) kept the Flyers alive with a kill and a block to make it 24-23 but Adams ended the set with a kill on the next point giving Bellarmine a 25-23 set win.
Lewis was its own worst enemy at the beginning of the fourth set committing four service errors, two attack errors and had a bad set as they trailed 8-5. The Flyers continued to trail at 12-10 but responded with a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the set at 14-13 on a bad set by Kristen O'Toole.
The Knights hung close trailing 18-16 after a double block from Izzie Salameh and Jacquie Hornung but that was the closest they got the rest of the way as Lewis closed the match with a 7-2 run. Preuss and Hyland combined to team up for 12 of the Flyers 14 kills in the set.
Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .336 (59 kills/13 errors/137 total attacks) and had 13 total blocks and 69 digs.
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) led five Flyers in double figures with 21 digs.
The Lewis defense held Bellarmine to a .135 hitting percentage in the contest. Adams and Hornung were the lone Knights in double figures with 15 and 12 kills respectively. O'Toole finished with 40 assists while Jordyn Kuchenbrod had 17 digs.
The Flyers conclude their five-match homestand on Saturday hosting Southern Indiana at 3 p.m.
