Rolla, Mo. – The fourth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team extended its season-high winning streak to seven straight by sweeping Missouri S&T on Friday night at Gibson Arena in Rolla, Mo.
The Flyers (12-2, 6-0 GLVC) got off to a slow start giving up the first two points of the match but responded with a 10-4 run to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. S&T (9-5, 2-3 GLVC) got as close as one at 10-9 before Lewis pulled away again thanks to an 11-3 run.
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) recorded four kills during that run.
The Miners fought off a couple of set points late in the set but the Flyers went onto win 25-17 after an attack error from Carlie Combs. Lewis had nine kills in the frame and hit .240 while holding S&T to a .061 attack percentage in the stanza.
The middle set featured 15 ties and five lead changes as the two sides battled back and forth. The Flyers led by as many as two in the frame but the Miners wouldn't go away and took a 22-21 lead late in the set.
Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) tied things at 22-22 but S&T regained the lead after a kill from Emilee Schlader on the next point.
An error from Combs evened things back up at 23 and then Hyland and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) teamed up to block Ellen Schulz to give Lewis a set point. The Flyers went onto win the set on the next point as
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) knocked home a kill to give Lewis the 25-23 victory.
The Flyers led pretty much the entire final set except for an early tie. Lewis built a nine-point lead midway through the set and the lead eventually grew to 12 points at 24-12 after a kill from Goodman. Lewis went onto win the set 25-13 after a kill from Sokeland.
Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .247 and finished with 37 kills. Hyland led the Flyers with nine kills while Stefanon finished with eight.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had five kills each.
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) dished out 28 assists and Hyland and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had 14 digs each.
The Miners finished the match with 29 kills with nearly half of those coming from Schlader who had a match-high 14 kills. Sarah McGinnis finished with 16 assists and nine digs.
Lewis continues its road trip on Saturday taking on 14th ranked Drury in Springfield, Mo., at 3 p.m.
