Fourth Ranked Flyers Extend Win Streak To 13

ROLLA, Mo. – The fourth ranked Lewis women's basketball team overcame a slow start to pick up its 13th straight win with a 74-48 win at Missouri S&T on Thursday evening in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers (13-1, 4-0 GLVC) were led in scoring by Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 20 points while Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) finished with 13 points.

The Miners (5-6, 1-3 GLVC) started the game hitting four of their first five shots and scored the first nine points of the game. Lewis struggled to get its offense going in the early going making only one shot and turned the ball over a couple of times in the first 3:30 minutes.

Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) got the Flyers on the board hitting a jumper in the lane. A layup from Alex Kerr extended the lead back to nine but after that the rest of the quarter belonged to Lewis as they ended the quarter on an 18-0 run.

Kelliher had six points in the run while Hinders added five, Lockett had four and Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit a three.

Lewis continued its run scoring the first six points of the second quarter and 19 of the first 21 to extend its lead to 26 points on a jumper from Kelliher with 2:51 left in the half.
The Flyers shot 50 percent from the floor in the frame and took a 23 point lead into the locker room.

The two sides traded buckets in the third quarter with S&T outscoring Lewis 17-16 in the frame to cut into the deficit. The Flyers shot only 33 percent in the stanza while the Miners were 6-for-15 (40 percent) from the field.

S&T opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to under 20 points less than four minutes into the final frame. Lewis though ended the game on a 13-4 run to match its largest lead of the game on a jumper from Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) with 0:26 left in the contest.

The Flyers finished the game shooting 42 percent (32-for-76) from the floor, was 5-of-15 from three and shot 71 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Miners 48-to-40 in the contest and recorded 21 assists against only nine turnovers.

Defensively, Lewis held S&T to just 31 percent shooting and limited them to one three-pointer in 14 attempts. The Miners shot 69 percent at the foul line. Kerr led the Miners with 15 points off the bench.

The Flyers head to Springfield, Mo., on Saturday to take on third ranked Drury in a top 25 matchup at the O'Reilly Family Events Center at 1 p.m. The Panthers defeated Indianapolis 77-47 on Thursday night.
