INDIANAPOLIS – Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) poured in a career-high 33 points and
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin) finished one rebound shy of a triple-double in Lewis men's basketball 99-70 win at Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. The victory for the Flyers (12-3, 4-2 GLVC) was their first over the Greyhounds (10-5, 3-2 GLVC) at Nicoson Hall since a 69-67 win on Feb. 26, 2011.
The two teams went up and down in the first 20 minutes combining for 94 points and shooting 58 percent (37-for-64) from the field.
UIndy took its last lead of the half at 9-7 on a layup by Jesse Kempson with 17:19 to go in the frame. Lewis responded with a 10-2 run over the next 2:30 minutes to take a six-point lead. Blaylock and
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) had five points each in the run.
The Greyhounds cut the deficit to one but the Flyers answered with an 11-3 run to build its largest lead of the half at 32-23 on a dunk from
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame).
Indianapolis punched back with an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 36-34 on a three-pointer by Jimmy King with 6:03 to play in the half.
Lewis stretched the lead back out to seven but the Greyhounds cut it back to two on a three from Trevor Lakes with 3:24 left in the stanza. Blaylock and King exchanged jumpers and then McCullum hit a jumper to put the Flyers up four at the intermission.
Lewis shot 56.4 percent (22-for-39) from the floor in the first 20 minutes and was 4-of-10 from three. It outrebounded UIndy 16-to-11 and had a 24-to-10 advantage in points in the paint.
The 'Hounds connected on 15 of their 25 attempts (60 percent), including 6-of-10 from downtown and was 9-of-10 at the foul line.
Indianapolis scored the first five points of the second half to retake the lead at 51-50 on a three-pointer from King less than a minute in.
Blaylock answered with a jumper to give the Flyers the lead back for good and then McCullum hit a three-pointer and D'Avanzo capped the run with a dunk to make the score 56-50.
CJ Hardaway brought the Greyhounds back within three when he converted on old fashioned three-point play but that would be the closest they got.
Lewis stretched its lead to 10 on a three from Blaylock but Lakes answered with a three on the other end to cut it back to seven with 13:02 to play.
The final 12-plus minutes were all Flyers as they outscored UIndy 31-9 the rest of the way.
Lewis shot 61 percent (20-for-33) from the floor in the second half, including 6-of-11 from three and finished the game shooting 58 percent (42-for-72) from the field and was 10-of-21 from downtown. It outrebounded the Greyhounds 39-to-27 and outscored them 42-to-12 in the paint.
Blaylock was 13-for-19 from the floor, including 6-of-11 from three. He was joined in double figures by McCullum with 21, Oliver added 17 and D'Avanzo finished with 14. McCullum also had 11 assists and nine rebounds.
After allowing UIndy to shoot 60 percent in the first half the Flyer defense locked them down in the second half holding them to 7-of-31 (23 percent) shooting from the floor.
Lakes led three Greyhounds in double figures with 20 points while Kempson finished with 16 and King had 10.
Lewis returns home on Thursday (Jan. 24) to take on William Jewell at 7:30 p.m.
