INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis' women's basketball team got back in the win column defeating Indianapolis 70-57 on Saturday afternoon at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis, Ind. The Flyers (14-2, 5-1 GLVC), ranked 10th in the D2SIDA Media Poll and 18th in the WBCA Coaches Poll, never trailed in the contest.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led the way with 26 points and recorded career-highs in rebounds (17) and blocked shots (7) in the contest. The seven blocked shots are the second most in a game in school history.
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) finished with 11 points while
Allison Utterback (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) added eight points.
Lewis shot 42.6 percent (29-for-68) from the field, was 8-of-24 from downtown and perfect at the foul line. They outrebounded the Greyhounds (6-9, 0-5 GLVC) 42-to-41 and blocked 11 shots which is tied for third most in a game in school history.
Kelliher dominated in the opening quarter hitting 6-of-7 shots and scored 13 of the Flyers 22 points in the frame. Lewis led by as many as 10 points after a jumper from Hinders with 1:01 left in the stanza.
The lead expanded 12 less than two minutes into the second quarter after buckets from Kelliher and Utterback. UIndy answered with five straight points of its own to cut the margin back to single digits but Lewis countered with an 8-4 run to extend the lead to 11. However, the Greyhounds scored the final three points of the half to cut the Flyer lead to 34-26 at halftime.
UIndy scored four of the first six points to begin the third quarter to trim the lead to six after a jumper from Mickey Sasson but Lewis responded with a 6-1 spurt to extend the lead back to double figures. Katie Sowa cut the margin under 10 hitting a three-pointer with less than four minutes to play in the quarter but that would be the closest the 'Hounds got the rest of the contest.
The Flyers outscored UIndy 9-2 over the final 3:16 of the quarter to take a 17-point lead into the final frame.
Lewis led by as many as 18 points in the final quarter as the two sides traded baskets for the first six-plus minutes of the stanza. The Greyhounds used an 8-0 to cut the deficit to 67-57 with less than a minute to play but Utterback sealed the victory hitting her second trey of the contest on the ensuing possession.
The Flyer defense held UIndy to 33.3 percent (21-for-63) shooting in the contest and 4-of-14 from three. The 'Hounds did shoot 85 percent (11-of-13) at the foul line. Taylor Drury led three Greyhounds in double figures with 17 points while Emma Benoit and Laura Thomas had 11 points each.
Lewis returns home on Thursday (Jan. 24) to take on William Jewell at 5:30 p.m.
