ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in its 83-59 win over Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers, ranked 10th in the D2SIDA Media poll and 18th in the WBCA Coaches poll, improved to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC.
Lewis got off to a hot start hitting eight of its first 11 shots to build an 18-5 lead less than five minutes into the game.
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit back-to-back three's while
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) added eight points.
The lead grew to 15 on a pair of free throws from Kelliher but the Hakws (6-11, 2-7 GLVC) ended the quarter scoring 10 of the last 16 points to cut the Flyer advantage to 26-15 at the quarter break.
Rockhurst extended its run into quarter number two scoring eight of the first 10 points to get within 28-23 on a jumper from Lauren Krissman with 4:47 left in the stanza.
Lewis responded with a 12-0 run over the next 3:30 to take its biggest lead of the half at 40-23 on a pair of free throws from Hart.
The Flyers shot 52 percent (15-for-29) from the floor, was 3-of-11 from three but did shoot 90 percent at the foul line in the first 20 minutes. Kelliher led all scorers with 18 points while
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) added seven.
The Hawks got as close as 12 in the third quarter before Lewis went on a 17-7 run over the final six minutes of the quarter to take a 63-40 lead into the final period.
The Flyers extended its lead to as many as 27 points on a three-pointer from
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) with 6:44 to play. Gardner scored 11 of her career-high 16 points in the quarter on 3-of-3 shooting, including 2-for-2 from three and hit 3-of-4 foul shots.
Lewis finished the contest shooting 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the field, was 8-of-22 from three and shot 81 percent (17-for-21) at the foul line. Kelliher led all scorers with 20 points while Gardner had 16 and
Allison Utterback (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) finished with 10.
Madeline Ronshausen, Rockhurst's leading scorer on the season, finished with 17 points and Briahtia Sebek added 12 points of the bench. The Hawks shot 47 percent (27-of-51) in the game, was 4-for-12 from downtown and shot 78 percent at the foul line.
The Flyers return to action on Thursday (Jan. 31) when they travel to Springfield to take on Illinois Springfield at 5:30 p.m.
