INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The sixth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team comeback attempt from a 2-0 deficit come up short in its 3-2 loss at Indianapolis on Friday evening. The loss snapped the Flyers 10-match winning streak and dropped them to 16-2 overall, 5-1 in the GLVC. The Greyhounds improved to 12-4, 4-2 GLVC.
Lewis had leads of 22-20 and 24-23 in the opening set but was unable to close it out as UIndy took advantage of three straight Flyer errors to take the opener 26-24.
Lewis led for a majority of set two but once again was unable to close it out as the Greyhounds scored the final three points of the set to win 25-23.
The Flyers overcame a four-point deficit in set three to win 25-22 to extend the match to a fourth set.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) each had four kills apiece in the stanza.
Lewis led by as many as eight points in set four but UIndy fought back to within 19-18 thanks to a 10-2 run. The Flyers answered with a 5-1 run of their own to get to set point at 24-19. The 'Hounds fought off the first set point but Lewis was able to close it out to win 25-20 to force the winner take all set.
The Flyers scored the first two points of the final set but were unable to overcome a 7-1 by Indy. Lewis wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the set.
Preuss led the Flyers with 17 kills while
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added 14 and
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) finished with 13 kills.
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) had 48 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished with 19 digs.
Lewis hit .155 for the match recording 58 kills against 29 errors in 187 chances. The 'Hounds also hit .155 for the match with 61 kills against 31 errors in 193 chances.
Lewis heads to Louisville, Ky., on Saturday to take on Bellarmine at 2 p.m. (CDT).
